Battle Of The Longwear Foundations: Kat Von D vs Urban Decay!

As our lives get busier and days longer, there is an overwhelming demand for a foundation that won't quit. Many brands come out with their version of a long-wearing foundation, but more often then not, especially on more oily skin types, the product likes to slip and slide around before the day is done. Two of the most hyped being Kat Von D's Lock-It and Urban Decay's All-Nighter foundations. Both brands have similar claims; a long wearing, full coverage product with a matte finish that controls oil and stays put; but even though I love both brands, there's an obvious winner for me.

Let's start with the what they have in common. Both products are insanely pigmented, provide phenomenal coverage and a little really does go a long way; But that where the similarities end. Seeing as Kat Von D Beauty has only been in the U.K. for a few months, I had to guess my shade (Light 44 Cool) online, which I was quite nervous about, but luckily I got a perfect match. The pale, pinky undertones were ideal for my extremely fair skin which, more often than not, I find it extremely hard to find colours light enough for. I was shade-matched at my local Urban Decay counter when I first bought my All-Nighter foundation, and the colour (1.0) seemed to work beautifully. Once I applied the foundation myself at home, I quickly realised that the undertone was too yellow (a problem I often have) and the longer I left the foundation on, the more it would oxidise.

Not only does it have an incredible colour range, Kat Von D's Lock-It foundation is also the best product I've tried for keeping my oil at bay for longer, although wouldn't agree with it's 24-hour budge-proof claims. It has a thick, fast drying formula which I find easiest to blend out with a round, flat top brush. As the product is so extremely matte, it can feel a little drying on the skin but not enough to make it uncomfortable. Maybe not the best idea if you're skin is on the drier side, but perfect for oilier skin types like mine. The only real fault I have with this product is that it did break me out the first few times I used it due to its thickness and intensity, but I persevered because of how much I loved everything else about it and my skin quickly got used to it. I haven't had a problem since. If you are ordering the foundation online, it would be easier to get a perfect match by googling swatches instead of just going by the pictures on the site.

As for Urban Decay's All-Nighter foundation, the formula is incredibly lightweight, easy to blend out and almost feels like you're not wearing any product at all. Unfortunately after a few hours, I could already see the foundation starting to break down around my problem areas. The foundation tends to slip and slide , not controlling oil as well at all. I could maybe look past having to do a few touch ups if it wasn't for how badly the foundation oxidises once applied to the skin (as you can see from the photo above). Applying before work in the morning the colour looks pretty good, but getting home 8+ hours later and it looks like I'm wearing the completely wrong shade. On darker skin tones it could be a little more forgiving and it's been suggested that you should buy a few shades lighter than your skin tone to allow for oxidisation but with skin as pale as mine that's just not possible.

Packaging-wise, All-Nighter is the stand out winner for me. The slim, gunmetal design and asymmetric cut-outs create a sleek yet grungy aesthetic that really catches the eye. While Kat Von D's packaging is still absolutely beautiful and I love the wax-stamp inspired detailing, it's just a little bulky in comparison.
Of all the long-wear foundations i've tried so far, Lock-It definitely comes out on top. It's incredible pigmentation, true matte finish, ability to keep oil at bay and the fact that it's still pretty much perfect when I get home at the end of the day knocks all of it's competitors out of the park. Definitely check it out if you're on the oilier side or are prone to make up meltdown!
